Review the proposal against the survey, not just the product name and total. It should identify species or uncertainty, activity, exact zones, system geometry, edges, fixings, access, nest checks, maintenance and exclusions.

Make the drawing carry the promise

Ask for annotated photographs or drawings showing protected and unprotected areas, corners, open returns, doors, drains, plant and neighbouring ledges. Every access panel and maintenance opening should be visible. “Net courtyard” or “spike ledges” is not enough to assess the boundary.

The survey date and observed activity should appear beside the design. A netting proposal should explain perimeter junctions, fixing surfaces and how trapped-bird risk is managed. A ledge system should show width, endpoints and how cleaning continues.

Record who supplies safe access, protects residents and passers-by, moves equipment and signs off completion. Ask for before-and-after images, product details, exclusions and the first maintenance check.

Put wildlife checks into the work sequence

GOV.UK says it is an offence in England intentionally to take, damage or destroy a wild bird’s nest while it is being used or built, with additional protection for some species. Require a pre-start activity check and a stop route if a nest or unexpected bird is found.

Do not assume a general licence covers ordinary proofing. The current GOV.UK licence collection says users should read the relevant licence and advice notices and consider alternatives. Where a licence may be needed, identify who assesses and documents compliance.

No proposal should promise permanent absence. Birds may use nearby unprotected areas, components can be damaged and later building work can affect the system. Maintenance and reporting complete the proposal.

Call The City Pest Company on 0203 393 2338 with the survey and building drawings. See the pigeon and bird service page for context.

FAQs

Should the proposal include maintenance?

Yes. It should identify inspection access, vulnerable points, reporting and repair arrangements.

Is a product warranty the same as proofing performance?

No. Read the actual product and installation terms, scope and exclusions.

Can work start if nesting is uncertain?

The uncertainty needs a competent pre-start assessment and a clear stop procedure.
