Do not discard a bed or sofa simply because bed bugs are suspected. First assess whether the item is actually affected, whether its seams and frame can be inspected and treated, and whether its condition already makes safe handling impractical. Unplanned removal can carry bugs through the building and does not address other harbourages.

Assess construction and condition

Record insects, spotting, eggs or cast skins at mattress piping, frame joints, headboards, sofa seams and underside fabric. Note tears, hollow sections, deep buttoning and inaccessible cavities. A sound simple frame may be workable; a heavily damaged upholstered item with inaccessible voids raises different questions.

Ask the treatment provider how the proposed method reaches the relevant parts and whether dismantling is included. Steam applied to selected surfaces is different from whole-room heat, and neither should be promised without checking materials and method.

If the item remains

Keep it in its room until the plan is agreed. Follow only the preparation supplied for that item, and do not transfer cushions or drawers to an unaffected room. Ask what must remain accessible, what may be cleaned afterwards and how follow-up evidence will be judged.

If disposal is chosen

Agree containment, the route through the building and the waste arrangement before moving it. In a block, protect corridors, lifts and collection areas from loose material. Mark the item so another person does not take it for reuse, subject to the property's waste procedure. Disposal is a handling decision, not proof that the room is resolved.

Consider replacement timing. Bringing a new bed into a room before the wider inspection or treatment plan is complete may expose it to the same unresolved source.
